Some diseases are inherited from parents through their genes.
These diseases are called GENETIC DISEASES. With the new technology revolution in the fields of genetics and cell biology,
scientists are finding more sophisticated ways to prevent and treat these devastating diseases. The federal government
and private foundations provide millions of dollars each year for research. There is fierce competition for these funds
by various groups trying to find the cure for these genetic diseases. You are a part of a group
that will testify before a Senate Subcommittee on funding for disease research. You will need to create a presentation
convincing the senators (your classmates) of the importance of providing more funds for continuing research of your disease.
The senators (your classmates) will vote on the presentations to award one group additional funds (extra credit).
Task
Your job is to research your assigned area individually.
Then, as a group you will take your information and present it to the committee (your classmates).
Roles:
- Doctor: Describe what the disease is and how it is inherited. Also provide numbers
of people affected by the disease. What resources do you provide for your patient and their family? How is the
disease tested?
- Researcher: Describe what new research is being done to help people with this disease.
How is it being treated or prevented? What new research is needed? Where are you getting funds for your research now?
- Family Member: What are the symptoms of this disease? What is life like for your
family member? How does your family member deal with difficulties associated with your disease? What types of daily activities
can youyour family member do? What kind of daily treatments are necessary?
*If you have a group of 4 people please see me for the additional job.
Resources
The following are a list of suggested resources. You are required to use
a minimum of 3 different sources per group. These sources must be cited correctly in a Works Cited list at the end of
your project. As you choose your sources remember to check the validity of each source especially when using internet
sources (Is this a trusted and accurate source? University website vs. a middle school student's website?).
*These sites are simply suggestions and a recommended starting point. Please search for information
more specific to your topic on your own.*
