... and Fuego...
Vulcan and Fuego came to Jonas Salk in Janruary of 2006.
They were a gift for Mrs. Cotugno from her sister Katie. Vulcan and Fuego are Oriental Fiebellied Toads.
Their scientific name is Bombina orientalis. Their main feature is that their tongues do not extend like other
toads or frogs. To feed, they leap forward to catch their prey in their mouths while using their forearms to stuff the
prey in the rest of the way. They only eat live food because they hunt by movement.
Home? 10 galloon tank maintained by Mrs. Cotugno and her students
Favorite food: Crickets !!
Favorite temperature: between 74 and 78 degrees
Can you pet the frogs? NO! Mrs. Cotugno is the only one permitted
to open the frog tank. Their bellies are slightly toxic and Mrs. Cotugno needs to wash her hands before and
after she handles the frogs.
Favorite trick: climbing to the top of the tank using the corner of the glass
to brase themselves - Fuego (green) is especially good at this but Vulcan (brown) can do this trick as well.
